ROTARY AFRICA MOBILITY PROJECT

Wheel chair users raising funds for other wheel chair users in Sierra Leone

The Roborough Rotary club is committed to raising £10,000 for the Rotary Africa Motivation Project (RAMP), which is an approved Rotary charity by organising a Wheelchair Rally on the 13th June 2010 at UCP Marjon Plymouth.   This is an opportunity for wheelchair/mobility users to take part in a sponsored rally to raise funds for those who do not have wheelchairs in Sierra Leone.  This event is open to all who wish to join in.  Please contact George Walker 01822 859 252 or mobile 07886 960782  e-mail grw@wcr10.co.uk

Wheelchair Rally 2009.

Last year on the 28th June, the first Wheelchair Rally was held. For a report and pictures of how the event went please go to www.roborough-rotary.org.uk

Background
Sierra Leone is recovering from a 10 year civil war which recently ended in 2002.  Today it is a fragile state.  Many individuals carry a lasting legacy from the civil war with missing limbs and/or contracting Polio.  Today these individuals, young and old, find it near impossible to move around the country therefore, reducing there chances for employment and earning enough to put food on their family table, or unable to attend school and gain an education.

Many well meaning western organisation donated wheelchairs but many are unsuitable for the terrain in Sierra Leone and do not last long, fall apart or become damaged and are not repairable.

RAMP has limited supply of wheelchairs for Sierra Leone, which is the poorest country in Africa.  RAMP’s aim is to build a network of centres to train individuals to set up workshops on the ground to assemble and repair of wheelchairs, and provide support, training and employment.
