RAMP - Background
A visit to Sierra Leone by Clifton Rotarians working with Mercy Ships identified that many donated wheelchairs fail within a year or two. They do not meet the demands of the terrain, are not fitted to the size or needs of the patient and cannot be maintained. Mobility equipment gets children to school and enables adults to be self reliant but what is the value of a wheelchair if it cannot be used after one year?
RAMP provides a sustainable solution, building equipment in country that is designed for the patient and for Africa thus transferring knowledge and skills. RAMP has set up two workshops to build tricycles and wheelchairs with the aid of partners who have contributed designs, management and resources at no cost to the project. They are Mercy Ships, Handicap International, PET International, Motivation, and Leonard Cheshire International. The Rotary Club of Bo provides local support and the Rotary Foundation made a grant of $40000.
RAMP is a project of the Rotary Club of Clifton. All funds are managed as restricted funds within Charity (number 0122291). Volunteers meet their own expenses and travel costs.
